Stuck in death plateau quest - can't progress

So I've been trying to do death plateau and got to the point where I am supposed to give Tenzing his spiked climbing boots, as well as 10 bread and 10 trouts back.
I've given him the items he asked for and right after I gave him the items the dialog box canceled and now I am stuck to a point where he will continue to ask for the items (which I can't give him again because I got the climbing boots originally from tenzing and I can't them again from him) while on the other side the quest log says I've returned the items and should now continue with the secret map - which I don't have because I'm supposed to get the map from tenzing in return for the items.
Also, in case there is interest: I am willing to try and reproduce this, considering I don't need to regain the required items every time
