My 10th Coded Quest (Story)

Alright fuckers,

Exactly a year ago, I was thrown out from my comfy software engineering job due to smoulderingly useless faggots in upper management who have nothing else better to do than masturbate to their stock prices going up. Not gonna lie, I was pretty lost, but mostly angry. My manager who was amazing, sent me a box of my stuff, and that was the end. It was abrupt and god damn. did. it. suck.

I raged for what seemed to be weeks on end, but I was legit looking for validation. Some part of me wanted to still code, because I just enjoyed making something.

I went on trying to contribute to open source software like Home Assistant, WoW private servers, 3D Printing, but none of them caught on somehow.

Then I happened onto 2009scape. I thought to myself, what the fuck is this shit. Should I even care anymore?

I played the game, and I kid you not, this was as if nostalgia kicked you in the balls. I was transformed to that 2001 me (about 12 years old) where I was fighting with my brother over a PC to play Runescape/Maplestory/Neopets. I wasn't allowed to spend money back then to pay for membership for anything, so I always wondered what was over the wall at Taverly.

2009Scape brought back all those memories, plus more. The day I opened the gates at Taverly into the members area, and I was hooked. I travelled EVERYWHERE to see stuff I never got to see.
But to my disappointment, some parts of the members world were not implemented or bugged out. Fortunately, since I have the c0dInG eXpeRieNcE of an audistic[sic] monkey, I wanted to give it back to the community. I hopped onto discord in hopes to find out more, but accidentally joined VC lmao. The rest is history. Well, mostly in discord history.

So I coded for 2009scape. I especially wanted to experience quests, so I put it onto myself to code out members quests. Some short, some boringly long, some partially finished ones.

After writing 10 god damn quests...

I want to kill all of you.

Why the fuck did I do this after a year, I don't know. Maybe I'm masochistic, or maybe I just like it. Maybe I like the community that is 2009Scape with all its rough and stupid edges, maybe its other amazing people who are really trying to make 2009Scape authentic as fuck.

A lot of it was hard fucking work. Mostly picking up on contextual knowledge on how to do things in code, testing back and forth, randomly bitfucking varbit and varps and varcs and vags. I watched so many fucking 2009 videos with the shittiest music on Youtube, Youtube should be paying me at this point. Yall went through the same and put it so much fucking work too.

But as much as I want to kill all of you, I am grateful for yall being amazingly helpful, testing, guiding, being patient, and generally having a really supportive community all round (with exceptions here and there, but come on this is a public space). Some of you have tolerated shit for years, and yet you are still here. Why? How are you still doing this lmao? You people rock.

So here is my 10th written quest as a cheers to yall, as a push for 578, and as a thank you to this project and community.

It's been a long year.

Love you cunts,
Ovenbread

P.S. No worries, I currently have a job right now.

You're undeniably a champion.
I really want to code for the game, but I'm terrified to learn another language. I've coded python and C++/C# for years, and java has always been intimidating to me.
It's people like you that will no doubt eventually inspire me to get going, and get coding. I'll get there. Just need to dodge current work burnout, and try to find a way to feel passionate about coding again.

Seriously though, you're a champion.
Your contributions are huge, and indefinite in at least a time-scale.

Hope to see you stick around <3

Before this project I had never use Kotlin but the dev community is great. My advice is to take the leap and look at some of the smaller issues and figure out what's going on under the hood. We could always do with more devs especially on those random issues that aren't really linked to new content.

Just don't dive in to trying to do 10 quests. That's crazy.....
